EV charging costs by car
100+ cars at 8,000 miles a year. Off-peak from about 6p to 7.6p, the 26.32p cap, and public rapid from 45p to 75p.
Intelligent Octopus Go and other UK overnight rates
Savings compare unit rates only. The standing charge (£200.13/year at 54.83p/day) is excluded because it is typically similar across tariffs and is paid either way. Default is the Ofgem price cap GB average for Direct Debit, 1 October to 31 December 2026: 54.83p/day. Regional standing charges differ. This is not a supplier-specific rate.

Slide your annual mileage to see yearly home charging at 7.6p/kWh, the 26.32p cap and public rapid chargers.
Dehumidifier vs tumble dryer running costs
Compare a 0.8 kWh dehumidifier load with a 1.4 kWh heat-pump tumble dryer and a 3.1 kWh condenser dryer.
Shift appliances onto cheap overnight electricity
Set your weekly runs to see the saving from delaying heavy appliances until the 11:30 PM – 5:30 AM cheap window.
The off-peak rate is the same as or above the day rate. Set the off-peak rate lower than the day rate to calculate an overnight saving.
Excludes standing charge (£200.13/year). That charge is typically similar across tariffs, so it is not part of this saving.

Energy-saving picks for UK homes
Gadgets that cut your bills, whether by using cheap overnight power or simply using less.
1. Lakeland Dry:Soon Mini 3-tier heated airer
Lakeland rates this Mini at 198W. A 6-hour dry is 198W × 6h = 1.19 kWh: about 9p at 7.6p/kWh, or about 31p at 26.32p/kWh. That is the airer’s electricity only.
2. BLACK+DECKER 3-tier heated airer with cover
The listing is 300W. An hour is 0.3 kWh: about 2.3p at 7.6p/kWh, or about 7.9p at 26.32p/kWh. That is pennies an hour beside a tumble-dryer cycle.
3. MeacoDry Arete One 12L dehumidifier
Laundry mode runs for 6 hours, then switches off. Meaco’s published example is about 4p an hour at 26.32p/kWh (about 150W). Six hours is about 0.9 kWh: roughly 7p at 7.6p/kWh, or 24p at 26.32p/kWh. It also pulls moisture out of the room while the washing dries.
4. Tapo P110M smart plug, 4-pack
These plugs meter watts and can switch on a schedule. They do not make an appliance use less power. Moving 2 kWh from 26.32p to 7.6p saves about 37p. Use them on a dehumidifier or heated airer that stays within the plug’s rating.
5. EcoFlow RIVER 2 Pro, 768Wh
Charge it on cheap 7.6p overnight power, then run a laptop or a lamp from it at the 26.32p day rate. Filling 768Wh from empty is 0.768 kWh of stored energy: about 5.8p at 7.6p, before the charger’s own losses.
6. tado° Smart Radiator Thermostat X starter kit
Each radiator can follow its own schedule, so you heat the rooms you are using and leave the others cooler.
7. Ninja Foodi MAX Dual Zone air fryer
Cooks two dishes at once, and uses far less energy than heating a full oven.

For 1–5 loads a week in flats or terraced/semi-detached homes, a 12L dehumidifier (paid link) wins hands-down: it uses roughly 0.8 kWh per load (~21p daytime or 6.1p overnight), never shrinks clothes, and pulls damp out of your walls and windows at the same time.
However, if you have a larger family washing 7+ loads of heavy bedding and school uniforms per week and don't want clothes airers standing out, the laundry comparison on this page uses about 1.4 kWh a cycle for a heat-pump tumble dryer, against about 3.1 kWh for the condenser example.
On Intelligent Octopus Go (claim £50 credit here), you always get 6 guaranteed hours of 7.6p/kWh electricity between 11:30 PM and 5:30 AM for your entire home.
Even better: whenever you plug in your EV and Octopus schedules a smart charge slot outside those hours (for example, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM when wind/solar generation is high), your entire house electricity rate drops to 7.6p/kWh during those bonus daytime half-hours too—meaning you can run your washing machine or oven for pennies during the day!
Yes. Charge a power station such as the EcoFlow RIVER 2 Pro (paid link) in the 7.6p window, then run a laptop or a lamp from it when the day rate is 26.32p. The 768Wh pack is 0.768 kWh of stored energy, about 5.8p at 7.6p before charger losses. The tariff creates the cheap rate. The battery only moves when you use that energy.
Most modern dishwashers and washing machines have a "Delay End" button—set them to finish at 5:00 AM so the heating cycle runs in the 7.6p window, and ensure you have working interlinked smoke/heat alarms in your kitchen and utility room. For dehumidifiers, towel rails, and e-bike chargers, plug them into a 13A-rated TP-Link Tapo P110M Energy Monitoring Smart Plug (paid link) to switch power on automatically at 11:35 PM.
